The verdict
San Diego is the rare place where beach, championship public golf and walkable downtown nightlife all fit in the same 48 hours without weather being the thing you plan around. The airport is minutes from downtown, which matters more than people expect when eleven guys are landing at eleven different times.
Torrey Pines is the hook. It is a genuine US Open venue, it is city owned, and anyone can book it. That is unusual and it makes the golf day feel like an occasion rather than a filler.
It is the wrong call if your group thinks San Diego is one walkable city. It is not. It is a set of neighborhoods that are genuinely far apart, and the transit does not connect the ones you care about. It is also worth knowing that the craft beer scene, which is half the reason people pick San Diego, has quietly contracted. And if you come in late May or June you will meet June Gloom, a marine layer that keeps the coast grey and cool while everyone at home pictures you in the sun.

Where to stay
Pick one neighborhood matched to your main activity. Beach, nightlife or golf. Trying to do all three from one base every night is how the trip becomes a commute.
Gaslamp Quarter hotel
The closest thing San Diego has to a classic bar crawl base. Walkable bars and restaurants, no cab required after dark. Costs more, and you are not on the beach.

Younger, cheaper than downtown, and the Garnet Ave strip gives you a real night out. Beach by day, bars by night, without the downtown premium.

Big houses directly on the sand, which is the only way to put twelve guys under one roof here. Check the noise rules before you book. The neighborhood publishes good neighbor guidance aimed squarely at short term renters, which tells you how the locals feel about groups like yours.

Calm resort island with the Hotel del Coronado, which reopened after a $550 million, six year restoration. Coronado Municipal golf is right there. This is a good base for an older group, not a party base.
Book itSkip La Jolla as a home base. It is beautiful and worth a dinner, but it is not where you want to sleep on a guys' trip.

Hotel prices and downtown crowding spike citywide. Same story for Pride weekend in mid July.

Torrey Pines
The reason to come. City owned, genuinely public, and a US Open course. Non resident green fees run $258 on a weekday and $322 on a weekend for the South Course. The North Course is $163 and $204. Book as far ahead as the system allows, because residents get preferential booking windows.

The value play. Roughly $44 to $83 plus a $25 advance booking fee for non locals, based on published 2024 figures, so confirm the current rate. Oceanfront municipal golf at that price is close to unheard of.

Verify every stop before you build a day around it. San Diego's beer scene has shrunk. Stone's Escondido production brewery and World Bistro is being wound down by its owner, though the Liberty Station and downtown taprooms are still open. Ballast Point is down to three locations nationwide. Local trade coverage documented a rising wave of county brewery closures through 2024. The listicle you found is probably out of date.

San Diego International is unusually close to downtown, which is a real advantage.
Whether you need a car depends entirely on where you sleep. Staying downtown or Coronado and staying put, you can skip it. Splitting time between Pacific Beach, La Jolla and Gaslamp, you need one.
Rideshare is reliable in San Diego proper. Expect weekend surge downtown and near the beaches.
The one thing people screw up
The neighborhoods are far apart and the trolley does not bridge them.
The trolley serves downtown, Old Town and Mission Valley well. It does not meaningfully reach Pacific Beach, Mission Beach or La Jolla, which are exactly the places groups want to be.
Real numbers: La Jolla to the airport is about 25 minutes. Coronado across to the SeaWorld area is about 25 minutes. These are not five minute hops.
So the group that books a cheap Pacific Beach house and plans to Uber into Gaslamp every night is looking at 20 to 30 minutes each way, at weekend surge, four nights running. That is real money and real time, and it comes out of the drinking budget.

Cost per head, 3 nights, no flights
The fixed part is the tax, and San Diego changed it in a way most people miss.
The hotel tax is now zone based, not flat. As of May 2025 it runs 11.75%, 12.75% or 13.75% depending on how close the property sits to the Convention Center, up from a flat 10.5%. A hotel a few blocks apart can carry a full two points more tax. When you are comparing rates across the city, the sticker price is not the comparison.
Add golf. Torrey South on a weekend is $322 a man before a cart.
Estimated all in per head for a three night weekend with one round at Torrey Pines and one real night out: $500 to $900. Treat that as a planning range, not a quote. Tax and fee figures checked August 2026.
