The number everyone quotes is three years old

Search what a bachelor party costs and you get $1,500 a head. That figure comes from a survey of 500 people that The Knot fielded in 2023. It is still being republished. In June 2026 the wedding site Joy reprinted the same $1,500, along with the same $2,000-if-you-fly and $1,000-if-you-drive splits, and labeled it "2025." No sample size, no methodology, no survey named. A 2023 number wearing a 2025 jacket.

Here is the current one instead. In May 2026 Splitwise looked at tens of thousands of real bachelor party groups in its own app, which is transaction data rather than people guessing on a survey. The average was $410 per person excluding airfare, over a three day trip with seven guys. The most common range was $100 to $200. Nearly half of all trips came in under $300 a head.

Add airfare and it gets more interesting, because the airfare number everyone quotes is wrong in the same way. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics put the average domestic fare at $428 in the first quarter of 2026, and that figure gets reprinted everywhere as the price of a flight. It is the average across all itineraries, and 45 percent of those were one way. Round trip itineraries averaged $522.

Your groomsmen are not buying one way tickets. So the honest all in figure for a flown bachelor party is about $932 a man, not the $838 you get by adding the blended number.

Two honest caveats. Splitwise only sees what a group actually splits through the app, so bar tabs somebody covered alone are missing, which makes $410 a floor and not a midpoint. And the BTS number is a national average, not a fare to these specific cities.

So why do the numbers in the table below run higher than $932? Because they price a group of twelve doing the thing that city is actually known for. A dayclub cabana in Vegas, tee times in Scottsdale, a boat on Lake Travis. The Splitwise average includes every low key trip where six guys drove three hours and drank in a rented house. Both numbers are true. Yours depends on which trip you are planning.

What each destination actually costs, per man

Three nights, group of twelve, excluding flights. Low is the off peak, midweek, share a room, skip the expensive thing version. High is the peak season weekend where you book the cabana, the boat or the tee time.

Air fares are the Bureau of Transportation Statistics average domestic itinerary fare for that airport, first quarter 2026, released June 2026. An itinerary is not a round trip. In the first quarter of 2026, 45 percent of domestic itineraries were one way at an average of $305 and 55 percent were round trip at an average of $522, so a group all flying round trip should budget roughly 20 percent above the figures in this column.

Two things fall out of that table that nobody writes down. Atlantic City in January is the cheapest weekend on this list by a wide margin, roughly $317 a man, because the beach is unusable and the boardwalk is dead and the casinos discount hard to fill rooms.

And Lake Tahoe's $503 low is a trap, because it is April, when the lifts have closed and the lake is too cold to use. The market is not giving you a bargain, it is correctly pricing a weekend with nothing to do.

The destinations, ranked

Best first. This is an opinion, not a spreadsheet. If the top pick fits your dates and budget, stop scrolling.

Bigger groups do not get cheaper, and the lodging data proves it

Everyone assumes a house splits better the more guys you cram in. Across all nine of these markets, short term rental data from April 2026 says the opposite.

Per man, per night, at two guys a bedroom.

Flat from three bedrooms to five, then a step up at six. In Vegas the per man cost doubles. In Tahoe it goes up 62 percent. The reason is that six bedroom houses are not a commodity, they are a thin luxury segment with pools and game rooms priced accordingly.

The caveat worth printing: the six plus bucket includes eight and ten bedroom estates, so a true six bedroom probably sits below that average. But the direction is identical in all nine markets.

The useful version: eight to ten guys in a four or five bedroom house is the cheapest per head this trip ever gets. Going from ten to twelve is where the lodging math turns against you, not where it starts working for you.

Three thresholds worth knowing before you book

Nine rooms is where hotels stop letting you self book and move you to group sales with a contract. Those contracts usually carry an 80 percent attrition clause, which means if you block twenty rooms you are paying for sixteen whether or not anyone sleeps in them. Twelve guys two to a room is six rooms and you are fine. Twelve guys who each want their own bed is twelve rooms and you have just signed something.

Six to eight is where restaurants stop taking online reservations and you have to call, and where automatic gratuity of 18 to 22 percent kicks in. At fifteen and up you are usually being handed a set menu.

Ten is where some activities become available at all. Brewery Tours of San Diego will not run a private tour below ten people.

The sprinter van is usually not the deal

A chauffeured sprinter in Nashville runs $1,400 to $2,750 a day, which at twelve guys is $117 a man against $21 to $31 for rideshare. It only wins on a day where the van sits waiting at one remote place, a golf course or the lake, or on a flat rate multi day package. Scottsdale operators do three days unlimited for $2,000, which is $167 a man across the whole weekend and beats everything. A self drive twelve seater from about $269 a day is the cheapest option on paper, and requires somebody to stay sober, which on this particular trip is usually nobody.

The weekend you pick matters more than the city you pick

Same city, same house, different weekend, double the price. The specific dates that will cost you.

Las Vegas

CES in early January and SEMA in early November both triple hotel rates. Convention weeks in general run three to five times normal.

New Orleans

Mardi Gras is the steepest premium on this entire list, two to three times normal, and large groups need to book six months out. Fat Tuesday is February 17 in 2026 and February 9 in 2027. Separately, September is the worst month to go, peak hurricane season with 165mm of rain, and August runs a heat index above 100F. New Orleans is cheapest exactly when it is worst.

Austin

the Formula 1 weekend at Circuit of the Americas, October 22 to 25 in 2026, runs downtown hotels three to six times baseline, and Texas hosts Ole Miss on October 24, so Formula 1 and an SEC home game land on the same day, which makes that Saturday the most expensive night of the Austin year. March is actually the more expensive month overall, averaging $342 a night against $257 in January. Also avoid SXSW in March, both ACL weekends in October, and UT home football Saturdays.

Scottsdale

the WM Phoenix Open in early February puts rentals 30 to 50 percent above an already peak January, and Barrett-Jackson in late January adds 15 to 30. June through August is 100F plus, and green fees drop from $550 to around $310. If your group can handle heat and tee off at dawn, that is a real and largely unwritten value window.

Lake Tahoe

April and May are mud season. Rental revenue collapses to a third of July and the federal lodging rate drops 42 percent in a single month, because the lifts have closed. Worse, resorts have been moving closing dates up, and two closed early during a March heat wave last season. A March or April ski trip now carries genuine closure risk.

Nashville

September and October are peak, not summer, which is the opposite of what most people assume. CMA Fest in June is the biggest single rate event.

Miami

December through April is peak. September through November runs 30 to 50 percent below it, and hurricane risk has largely passed by November. November is the best value to weather window Miami has and it sits three weeks before the December spike.

Atlantic City

only July and August weekends are genuinely expensive, $150 to $250 a night against $40 to $75 in January. August short term rental revenue is 7.4 times January's, the most extreme swing of any city here. May, June and September are the value windows.

San Diego

the flattest seasonality of the nine, roughly a 19 percent step up in June and July. Comic-Con is July 22 to 26 in 2026 and rooms near the convention center go months in advance.

Somebody has to say who pays for the groom

The convention is that the group covers the groom's share. Nobody announces it, everyone half assumes it, and then the bill arrives and it turns out four guys assumed and three did not.

Say it out loud in the first message. If the group is covering him, the per head number goes up by his share split among the rest, and everyone should see that number before they commit rather than after the flights are booked. On eight guys covering a groom, that is his whole trip divided seven ways, which is not nothing.

If the group is not covering him, say that too. Either is fine. The unspoken version is the one that causes problems.

Collect the money before you book, not after

Headcount decays. Twelve say yes in the group chat, nine send money, seven get on the plane. If you booked for twelve, the seven who came are covering five who did not.

Collect deposits before anything goes on one guy's card. Not the full amount, just enough that dropping out costs something. The guys who were never really coming will surface at that step, which is exactly what you want, eight weeks out instead of eight days out.

Whoever fronts the house should not also front the boat, the bus and the dinner. Spread the exposure so no single guy is out four thousand dollars waiting on everyone else to pay him back.

The one thing everyone screws up

Planning it for the best man instead of the groom.

Somebody picks Vegas because he wants Vegas. The groom does not drink much, gets motion sick on boats, and would have been happier with a lake house and a grill. He will not say so, because it is his party and he is being polite about it.

Ask him two questions before you pick anything. What does a good weekend look like, and what would you rather skip. Then plan that one. It is his last big trip as a single guy, not yours.
