Nashville vs Austin for a bachelor party
Updated October 2026 ยท Brocation Editors
Short version: on money, it is a tie. A normal three night weekend for twelve guys, flights included, comes to about $1,322 a man in Nashville and $1,317 in Austin. Five dollars. Anyone in the group chat arguing that one of these is the cheap option is arguing about the floor or the ceiling, not the trip you will actually take.
So the decision is not price. It is three other things: what month you are going, whether you are renting a house, and whether anyone in the group wants to be on a boat.
The numbers side by side
| Per man | Nashville | Austin |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | $96 to $327 | $195 to $330 |
| Lodging tax | about 16.75% plus $2.50 a night | 17%, $33 to $56 |
| The thing you came for | $43 to $93 | $92 to $134 |
| Food and bar | $360 to $750 | $200 to $460 |
| Getting around | $25 to $117 | $96 to $182 |
| Total, before flights | $524 to $1,287 | $616 to $1,162 |
| Avg fare per itinerary, Q1 2026 | $416 BNA | $428 AUS |
| Normal weekend, all in | $1,322 | $1,317 |
Three nights, group of twelve. Normal weekend is the midpoint of each city's range plus the Bureau of Transportation Statistics average fare for that airport, first quarter 2026. Totals are before lodging tax, which is about the same in both cities; with it Austin's range is $649 to $1,218. Full line by line on the Nashville and Austin cost pages.
Read the shape, not the total. Nashville has the wider range: it gets cheaper than Austin if you take a house and walk everywhere, and more expensive if you take hotel rooms and a party bus. Austin is flatter. It is harder to do cheaply and harder to blow up.
Let the month decide
This is the part nobody comparing these two cities writes down. They peak and bottom at different times, so the right answer changes with the calendar.
| Month | Nashville | Austin |
|---|---|---|
| January | Cheap | Cheapest month of the year, $257 a night average |
| February | Cheap | Cheap, $270 a night band |
| March | Fine | Most expensive month, $342 a night, SXSW |
| April | Fine | Peak band, $322 a night |
| May | Fine | Good weather, mid priced |
| June | Avoid CMA Fest, June 10 to 13 in 2027 | Hot, mid priced |
| July | Fine | Cheap band and the lake is at its best |
| August | Fine | 98F highs, fine only if you are on a boat |
| September | Expensive, autumn peak | Watch Texas home games |
| October | Expensive, autumn peak | Major event every weekend in 2026 |
| November | Fine | Fine |
| December | Fine | Fine |
The pattern: autumn is bad in both. In the federal government's 2026 lodging rates, Nashville sat at $217 for most of the year and jumped to $248 in September and October, and the Titans play at home through the autumn too. Austin in October 2026 has Austin City Limits on two weekends, Formula 1 on another and a Texas home game on the same Saturday as the Grand Prix.
Where they split is summer. Austin's rental market bottoms in July, and July is when Lake Travis is fullest. If the trip is built around a boat, July Austin is the value buy on this page. Nashville in June means avoiding CMA Fest, the single biggest rate event on its calendar, which runs June 10 to 13 in 2027 and moves into the new stadium.

The house is where the money is, and the rules differ
In Nashville, a five bedroom short term rental averages $383 a night. Split twelve ways that is $96 a man for the weekend, against $327 for hotel rooms two to a room. That three and a half times swing is the biggest single decision on a Nashville trip.
In Austin the house is dearer and it is taxed. Austin's lodging tax is 17 percent, 6 to the state and 11 to the city, and Texas applies it to any accommodation under 30 days, so the house is taxed exactly like a hotel. On a $780 a night six bedroom that is another $33 a man at checkout.
Taxes are a wash. Nashville stacks 7 percent state sales tax, 2.75 percent local sales tax and Metro's 7 percent hotel occupancy tax, about 16.75 percent, plus a $2.50 a night fee, and Tennessee makes Airbnb and VRBO collect it on rentals under 30 days. Within a quarter of a point of Austin.
The real difference is the rules, and it runs the opposite way to what most guides say. Metro Nashville's own permit page, updated March 2026, caps a short term rental at four sleeping rooms rented to a single party, whether or not the owner lives there. New permits for houses the owner does not live in are banned outright in Nashville's residential zones; older ones can renew but do not transfer when the house is sold. So the Nashville supply that fits twelve guys is thinner than the listings make it look. Before you pay a deposit on a "six bedroom" Nashville house, ask for the permit number and how many sleeping rooms it is permitted for.
Austin, which has the reputation for strict rental rules, has no headcount cap. A Texas appeals court struck the old occupancy limits down in 2019, and the city's current rules do not put one back. What gets an Austin house shut down is noise: any audible sound at the property line from 10pm to 10am. Ask an Austin host for the license number too, because platforms now delist unlicensed houses within ten days of a city notice.
What the weekend actually feels like
Nashville is nine blocks long. Sleep downtown or in SoBro and you can run the whole weekend on two airport transfers and your feet, which is why its transport line can be $25. The signature activity is the pedal tavern, $520 for the whole bike for ninety minutes, about $43 a man at twelve, the best value thing we have priced anywhere. And the bars run late: Tennessee law lets them sell until 3 a.m.
Austin is spread out. Twelve men are three cars every time you move, and Lake Travis is about 18 miles from downtown. The day on the water is the reason to pick Austin: a captained boat for twelve is $92 to $134 a man for four hours once gratuity, tax and parking are in. Check the lake level before you put down a deposit, because in April 2025 it was 43 percent full with one public ramp open. Nights end earlier too. Texas bars stop serving at 2 a.m. at the latest, and only with a late hours certificate, so the last hour of a Nashville night does not exist in Austin.
Food is not close. Central Texas barbecue is worth building a day around, and Terry Black's family pack feeds ten to twelve for $308, about $26 a man. The bar tab runs the other way: Nashville's food and bar line is $360 to $750 a man against Austin's $200 to $460, because a Broadway night is longer and there is no lake day eating into drinking time.
The verdict
Pick Nashville if the group is twelve guys who want to drink, walk and not make decisions, if half of them have never met, or if you can rent one house and fill it. Do not pick it for September or October.
Pick Austin if someone will organise a boat day, the group cares about food, and you can go in winter or July. Do not pick it for any weekend in October 2026, and budget the 17 percent before the group agrees a number.
If it is still a coin flip, go to Nashville. It is the one where nobody has to be in charge.
Questions
Is Nashville or Austin cheaper for a bachelor party?
Neither, for a normal weekend. On a three night, twelve man basis Nashville runs $524 to $1,287 a man before flights and Austin $616 to $1,162. With the average fare into each airport added, the midpoints land within about $5 of each other. Nashville has the cheaper floor because a shared house there is so cheap. Austin has the lower ceiling because there is no expensive thing you are pressured into.
Which is better for a bachelor party, Nashville or Austin?
Nashville if the trip is a bar trip and the group wants everything inside nine walkable blocks. Austin if the group wants a day on the water and better food, and can handle three cars every time you move. If you cannot decide, let the month decide.
What is the best month for a Nashville or Austin bachelor party?
January and February are cheap in both. Austin's rental market bottoms in January, February and July, and July is when Lake Travis is at its best. Nashville's federal lodging rate jumps in September and October, and Austin has a major event on every weekend of October 2026, so autumn is the worst time to go to either.
Do bachelor party house rentals have tax in Austin and Nashville?
Yes, in both, and it applies to the rental house exactly as it does to a hotel. Austin's is 17 percent. Nashville's is about 16.75 percent plus $2.50 a night. Ask for the total with tax before anyone sends a deposit.
