The verdict

Jackson is the trip for a group that actually skis. Corbet's Couloir, 4,139 vertical feet, and terrain that will humble anyone who has only skied in the east. Off the mountain it is the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar with saddles for barstools, elk in the National Elk Refuge, and the Tetons standing over all of it. No other American ski town looks like this.

Wrong for beginners and wrong for a big cheap group. The mountain is genuinely steep, the beginner terrain is limited and boring, and the whole valley is expensive because supply is capped by federal land on every side. JAC flights are pricey and weather diverts happen in winter. If half your group is intermediate, book Park City.

Getting around

JAC is eight miles from town, which is the shortest airport run on this list. Book a shuttle to Teton Village at about $45 a head or rent one 4WD SUV. The START bus runs town to village and is free with a lift ticket. Do not drive Teton Pass at night in a storm.

The one thing people screw up

Everybody plans to take the tram on day one and gets there at 9:30 to find a 45 minute line and the good snow already tracked out. The tram loads at 9am, the line forms at 8:15, and locals are on the first car. Send two guys to hold the line while the rest get boots on, or ski Thunder and Sublette until 11 and take the tram at lunch.

Cost per head, 3 nights, no flights
