The verdict
Park City is the ski trip for a group that does not ski every year. SLC is a hub with cheap flights, the drive is 35 minutes, and Main Street means you can ski all day and then walk to dinner and eight bars without moving a car. Park City Mountain is enormous and forgiving, so the two guys who have been on skis twice will have a fine day instead of a miserable one.
Wrong if you are a strong skier chasing steeps and untracked snow. Park City is wide, groomed and busy, and Deer Valley next door bans snowboards. Wrong also in April, when the base turns to slush by 11am and Main Street is half closed. Go to Jackson if the group can actually ski.

Where to stay
An Old Town Main Street condo
Walk to the Town Lift in the morning and to dinner at night. Never touch the car.
Book itA Canyons Village ski-in house
Bigger, newer, cheaper per head, with a hot tub. You need a car or the free bus to reach Main Street.
Book itHotel Park City
Quieter, on the golf course, and the shuttle handles the mountain runs.

Worth timing the trip around
The things that come back every year and change the price of the weekend. Pick your dates around one of these on purpose.
Sundance Film Festival
Main Street becomes unusable and every rate triples, but the skiing that week is empty because everyone is sitting in a screening. Lean in or route around it.
Presidents Day week
The other predictable spike. Lift lines at Park City Mountain double and lodging goes with them. Shift a week either direction and pay less for a better mountain.
Sundance has left town, and nobody has repriced yet
For twenty years, late January in Park City meant Sundance, and Sundance meant you could not get a room. That ended. The 2027 Sundance Film Festival runs 21 to 31 January in Boulder, Colorado, and Boulder is the festival's home from 2027 onward. January 2026 was the last Park City edition.
Nothing else about late January changed. The snow is the same, the mountain is the same, the town is the same. What changed is that the single biggest demand event of the winter is gone, and lodging inventory that used to sell out a year ahead is now just inventory.
Every guide you read about avoiding Park City in late January was written when that was true. It is not true any more. Check live rates for those dates before you write them off.

You do not need a car if you are in Old Town. Book an SLC shuttle for the group at about $50 a head round trip, then use the free Park City bus, which is genuinely good and runs to Canyons and Deer Valley. If you rent, get AWD and expect $30 a day for parking in Old Town.
The one thing people screw up
Groups book lift tickets at the window and pay $270 a day in February when an Epic Day Pass bought before the early December deadline is under $110. Buy the pass in November, not the week of the trip. The window rate is a penalty, not a price.
